Bad Song Contest

That's right, Weirdo is holding a bad song contest.

To compete simply send in your bad song. It can be submitted on any recorded format. Reels, 2-track tape, 16rpm lps, wax cylinders, beta tapes, etc are perfectly welcome alongside more popular formats. If you prefer you may also submit a score or even some mere rough chord charts/lyrics/directions.

It's completely up to you to decide why the song is bad. Perhaps you know a creepy song that's quite fascinating. Perhaps there's an especially annoying song you find very intensely mediocre. Perhaps you know one that unduly pushes the limits of what could be called a song. Or you may think some entangled aesthetic combination of all of the above. The song does not necessarily have to be written/recorded by you, although originality is a factor of the judging process.

Submissions must be recieved at Weirdo by September 1st, 2008 & will not be returned. Qualifications, disqualifications, & other decisions are entirely at the discretion of Weirdo. However please note that your comments are more than welcome & all submissions will be given due consideration.

The winner of the bad song contest will receive a $50 gift certificate to Weirdo, so be sure to include your contact info along with your submission. Winner, runners up & honorable mentions will be posted on this page as they come in for all to see, hear, & guffaw over. The winner will be announced on the Weirdo email list & posted here promptly upon the end of the submission period.

The Most Unwanted Songs (25 min)

The men behind what they call "The Most Unwanted Song," conceptual artists Vitaly Komar and Alex Melamid
" The most unwanted music is over 25 minutes long, veers wildly between loud and quiet sections, between fast and slow tempos, and features timbres of extremely high and low pitch, with each dichotomy presented in abrupt transition. The most unwanted orchestra was determined to be large, and features the accordion and bagpipe (which tie at 13% as the most unwanted instrument), banjo, flute, tuba, harp, organ, synthesizer (the only instrument that appears in both the most wanted and most unwanted ensembles). An operatic soprano raps and sings atonal music, advertising jingles, political slogans, and "elevator" music, and a children's choir sings jingles and holiday songs. The most unwanted subjects for lyrics are cowboys and holidays, and the most unwanted listening circumstances are involuntary exposure to commercials and elevator music. Therefore, it can be shown that if there is no covariance--someone who dislikes bagpipes is as likely to hate elevator music as someone who despises the organ, for example--fewer than 200 individuals of the world's total population would enjoy this piece. LP#1 Jim Bakker - How To Accomplish The Impossible (1977)

Hey, here come my first modest contribution to the vinyl sharity community : a full LP rip and high-def' scans for the cover art. Please not that Easy Share web hosting provide a limited hosting time of the uploaded files : 1 month after the last download.

I've found this spoken word record at Emmaüs sharity shop, This one was THE FOUND of the week-end, maybe first because it is quite unusual to found audiobooks or spoken word records in ENGLISH here in France ! (especially that kind of christian blah blah preacher speach, then the cover art is great ;-), and of course the purpose of this record :
